For this week’s Reel vs. Real feature, we bring you a 1992 biopic which earned Robert Downey Jr. his first critical acclaim for his portrayal of the iconic British comedian Charlie Chaplin.

Before he became famous for portraying the iron-clad superhero, Robert Downey Jr. had his first taste of critical acclaim for his performance in a 1992 American biopic entitled Chaplin. As the film’s title suggests, Downey starred as the British comedian Charlie Chaplin, portraying the silent film icon’s beginnings, struggles, and many loves throughout his colorful career.

Chaplin, produced and directed by Richard Attenborough, was the first film Downey made extensive preparations for, and prompted him to learn how to play the violin and tennis left-handed. He also had a personal coach so he could Chaplin’s posture, mannerisms, and disposition. In 1992, Downey’s portrayal earned him nominations for Best Actor at the 65th Academy Awards, Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Drama, and Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Best Actor, and won him the BAFTA for Best Actor and London Film Critics Circle Award for Actor of the Year.
