On this second to the last installment of this special World Heritage Sites edition of the Wanderlust Wonderlist, we trek down to the southern part of Asia, below the Himalayas where a rich pot of cultures lie waiting to be explored.

Agra Fort

Location: Uttar Pradesh, Agra District, India
Date of Inscription: 1983

“This powerful fortress of red sandstone encompasses, within its 2.5-km-long enclosure walls, the imperial city of the Mughal rulers. It comprises many fairy-tale palaces, such as the Jahangir Palace and the Khas Mahal, built by Shah Jahan; audience halls, such as the Diwan-i-Khas; and two very beautiful mosques.”

Old Town of Galle and its Fortifications

Location: City of Galle, Southern Province, Sri Lanka
Date of Inscription: 1988

“Founded in the 16th century by the Portuguese, Galle reached the height of its development in the 18th century, before the arrival of the British. It is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and South-East Asia, showing the interaction between European architectural styles and South Asian traditions.”

Kathmandu Valley

Location: Kathmandu Valley, Nepal
Date of Inscription: 2006

“The cultural heritage of the Kathmandu Valley is illustrated by seven groups of monuments and buildings which display the full range of historic and artistic achievements for which the Kathmandu Valley is world famous. The seven include the Durbar Squares of Hanuman Dhoka (Kathmandu), Patan and Bhaktapur, the Buddhist stupas of Swayambhu and Bauddhanath and the Hindu temples of Pashupati and Changu Narayan.”
