On the eastern-most edge of the Long Island Peninsula, you will find the beautiful beaches, friendly fisherman ports and natural beauty of Montauk. Just a few hours away from the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, this is one of the best spots to head to during the hot New York summers.
Let me start with a brief emotional introduction on why I loved Montauk before even setting a foot there. One of my favorite films is the 2004 Michel Gondry film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind — written by Charlie Kaufman and starring Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey. Here is a quick overview for the benefit of those who have yet to see it:
Joel (Carrey) meets Clementine (Winslet) on the train from Montauk to New York. It is discovered that Joel is trying to forget Clementine by having her erased from his memories. While she is being erased from his mind, he regrets it. The last thing Clementine tells him is “Meet me in Montauk”. Confusing? Definitely. Even if you have seen the movie several times, as I have. But its circular poetic beauty is haunting. And so is Montauk, where they meet for the first time, again and again.
So, where was I….? Yes, I had wanted to go to Montauk for many years now. Just a few hours by train or car from New York City, Montauk is located on the tip of Long Island.
It’s long sandy beaches are a delight for vacationers and surfers alike.
What I love the most about Montauk is that many of its areas are part state parks. There is very little development and many wild spots to discover. There are many seal colonies that live on the rocky beaches and occasionally, you can even spot a poor fellow that got stranded on the beach.
There are many, many attractions in Montauk, from the wonderful restaurants where you can eat killer crab cakes to the its famous lighthouse. This is an ideal place to get away from the city and find eternal sunshine….
“Meet me in Montauk.”
