Shepherdess O Eiffel tower whose flock of bridges bleats at the morning… In 1912, Guillaume Apollinaire, a French writer , compared bridges to sheep and the Eiffel Tower to a shepherd. This structure was erected between 1887 and 1889 as the entrance arch. For the Exposition Universelle, a World’s Fair marking the centennial celebration of the French Revolution.
The old Lady is now the symbol of Paris worldwide, but at the time the controversial tower eliced some strong reactions, and a petition of 300 names, including those of prestigious writers like Guy de Maupassant, Emile Zola, and Alexandre Dumas fils was presented to the city government, protesting its construction.
The petition read, “We, the writers, painters, sculptors, architects and lovers of the beauty of Paris, do protest with all our vigor and all our indignation, in the name of French taste and endangered French art and history, against the useless and monstrous Eiffel Tower.”
