The Petzval (D)SLR Art Lens $1 Million Stretch Goal, Mount Questions, and Number Engraving Updates

Hello everyone, have we got news for you! In this update, you’ll find discussions on the $1 million stretch goal, a first look at the engraving as well as our developers’ explanation regarding the mount questions everyone’s been asking about. Read on to find out more!

$1,000,000 Stretch Goal

We’re just a few more pledges shy of hitting the elusive $1,000,000 mark! Once we hit this, every backer* who contributed to the project will be receiving shiny front and back brass lens caps with internal felt lining to protect your precious Petzval (D)SLR Art Lens! So many people requested for this, we just had to add this as a stretch goal!

*For those who pledged on the lower tier rewards without the Petzval lens, unfortunately we cannot send out the bonus stretch goal rewards tagged $300,000 onwards.

Petzval Number Engraving

Are you curious about where your unique Petzval serial number will be located? Here’s a mock-up of where the number will be. Regarding the character engraving on the lens (for our special pledgers), the location of this currently under discussion. Click here to see full detail of the number engraving location.

Will the Petzval Lens be Available in Other Camera Mounts?

Right now, we have been receiving a lot of inquiries if the Petzval Lens would be available for other camera producers. The developers are working hard looking for solutions to everyone’s mount inquiries and requests. However, we would like to stress on the fact that the focus of development at the moment is perfecting the Nikon and Canon mount lenses. This is because we want the Petzval to be a really great product that works amazingly once we’re ready to deliver.

You can find a further explanation about our challenges with creating different mounts below:

Upon development, the Petzval lenses are precisely calibrated for a dedicated mounting profile (Nikon F or Canon EF). Although possible, by using a third-party adapter you may lose some photo quality because of mechanic tolerance. This can especially be seen on high-precision digital cameras. As there will be tolerance on the adapters (especially third party brands), most likely users will lose the precise flange distance after using the adapter. That’s the reason we propose to use the dedicated lens mount directly on Nikon F and Canon EF cameras. There is also the challenge on flange distance that varies from camera to camera, explained further below:

“Flange distance…is the distance from the mounting flange (the metal ring on the camera and the rear of the lens) to the film plane. This value is different for different camera systems. The range of this distance which will render an image clearly in focus within all focal lengths is usually measured in hundredths of millimeters and is known as the depth of focus” – Wikipedia

The flange distance of Canon is the shortest, so the Petzval Canon EF lens will not fit into any other SLR body. For other major SLR brands, the difficulty is that the flange distance is very close to Nikon’s so it is technically not possible to use the Petzval with other mounts. A correction lens would be needed in addition to the Petzval lens (on top of a mount adaptor) to do this and might be a cause for quality loss. There are several after market adaptors out there that can do this. However we can not guarantee the quality and that there is not a quality loss when using these.

As stated, our focus is now to optimize the lens for Canon and Nikon and to create the best possible results, without starting with new projects that might de-focus us from the production and engineering of this lens. Thank you!

The new Lomography Petzval (D)SLR Art Lens is a reinvention of the legendary portrait glass lens that first appeared in the 19th century. Our version is a high-quality glass optic that makes it possible for Canon and Nikon analogue and digital SLR mount cameras to yield the famous Petzval look – sharp focus areas with unique bokeh effects, strong color saturation, and artful vignettes. It’s a distinct look that goes far beyond using photo editing software and filters.

Fund this project on Kickstarter and help us bring back this extraordinary lens for 21st century photographers and filmmakers!
