Much of what we know about the fascinating world of the geisha, one of Japan’s iconic cultural symbols, come from books and sometimes, documentaries and films. So, we invite you to take step back in time and take a look at some photos from Kyoto, the Japanese capital from the olden days and the center of geisha culture.
If you’ve ever been curious about the lives of geisha back in the days in Japan, the photos below offer a glimpse of what a typical day at work was like for these beautiful women of art, one of Japan’s best known and most fascinating cultural icons. While the black and white photos taken in Kyoto in 1946 do not exhibit the colorful details in the traditional garbs and accessories of the geisha and maiko (apprentice geisha), they do show us scenes that are perhaps rare even in modern-day Japan.
