The Lomography Petzval Portrait Lens: An Introduction To Kickstarter Mechanics

2013-07-25

Wanna pledge your support for the Lomography Petzval Portrait Lens but are unsure about how Kickstarter works? Then this is the ultimate how-to guide for you! Here, we explain what Kickstarter is, how you can make a pledge for the Petzval lens, and other relevant FAQs.

1. What is Kickstarter and why are you running the campaign there rather than here?

Kickstarter is a website which allows companies and individuals to seek funding on projects that they are working on. They have a bunch of interesting projects which you can view and support by making a pledge.

Earlier this year, we successfully funded our ambitious plan for the Lomography Smartphone Film Scanner via Kickstarter and we’ve decided to team up with them again for the Lomography Petzval Portrait Lens!

Launching the project there is a fantastic way for us to introduce our revolutionary new product to a whole new market and show them why Lomography is so amazing!

2. What is a pledge and how do I make one?

Head on over to the Lomography Petzval Portrait Lens Kickstarter page and read all about it. If you believe in the product and want to help us bring it to life (and to your doorstep!), you can make a pledge or donation to back the project up.

You can pledge anything upwards of $1 up to $2,500 to support the campaign. Pledges are different from simply buying something in a shop because you are only charged the amount you pledge if a project reaches its funding goal. For everyone to enjoy the Petzval Portrait lens, we must reach our Kickstarter campaign funding goal of $100,000.

3. How does the Petzval Portrait Lens price on Kickstarter compare to the Lomography Online Shop price when it officially launches?

We are offering the Petzval Portrait Lens at a more affordable introductory rate than what the final launch price will be. So buying on Kickstarter now is great value! As a bonus, we also offer added perks and certain cameras at special discounts in the Kickstarter rewards for extra savings and cool perks!

4. What are rewards?

Rewards are the ‘extras’ we offer you in return for making your pledge. Many of our rewards on Kickstarter allow you to get a Lomography camera and the Petzval lens as a combination for a great price. You can even get a special serial number and your name engraved on the lens as a reward! We also have bigger treats available such as trips to visit Lomography HQ in Vienna and the birthplace of Joseph Petzval in Slovakia!

5. I picked a reward where you didn’t specify an exact camera model. Will I be able to pick the camera I get?

This will depend on the stock of the camera in your country. But as far as possible, yes, we will try to give you the option to pick the model you receive. For example, if you picked the La Sardina reward tier, you will be able to choose which La Sardina you want.

6. Can I change my pledge after I’ve made it?

Yes, you can easily change your pledge right up until the Kickstarter campaign ends on XXX. To change your pledge, simply go to our Project Page and click the ‘Manage Your Pledge’ button. On this page, you can change the amount you pledge and change the reward you pick.

7. I have made a pledge. When will I be charged?

Backers will only be charged once the campaign ends and we reach our targeted goal. Afterwards, we will send you a questionnaire to fill-in so that we can get detailed information from you (delivery address, special requests you may have).

8. When will the lenses be available for shipping?

Expected delivery date of the lenses is on February 2014. However, we are confident to have the first 1,000 lenses shipped out by December 2013. You can see the shipping date of each reward in the details on the Kickstarter page.

9. How do shipping and tax costs work?

Depending on where you live, Shipping/Tax costs must be added on to your pledge. Shipping is free to all USA customers. Shipping costs $10 for all Rest of World customers. The shipping and tax costs for EU customers vary depending on the reward tier you would like. Please note that the additional costs for EU customers aren’t so much shipping costs; they are more extra costs we must charge in order to cover EU taxes.

10. I made a pledge but forgot to add Shipping/Tax costs. What should I do?

If you made a pledge but didn’t realize you need to add these extra shipping and tax costs, don’t worry, changing your pledge is really easy. Simply go to the Project Page and click the ‘Manage Your Pledge’ button. Add the amount to cover Shipping/Tax and you’re set!

11. What are stretch goals?

Stretch goals are added incentives that Kickstarter campaigns can boost to encourage you to push past the original goal. There are freebies for all backers once we hit a certain stretch amount so everybody wins!

12. I have a question about Kickstarter mechanics which isn’t covered here. Who can I ask?

Simply post your question in the comments and we will answer as soon as we can!

The new Lomography Petzval (D)SLR Art Lens is a reinvention of the legendary portrait glass lens that first appeared in the 19th century. Our version is a high-quality glass optic that makes it possible for Canon and Nikon analogue and digital SLR mount cameras to yield the famous Petzval look – sharp focus areas with unique bokeh effects, strong color saturation, and artful vignettes. It’s a distinct look that goes far beyond using photo editing software and filters.

Fund this project on Kickstarter and help us bring back this extraordinary lens for 21st century photographers and filmmakers!

How to Develop Photos on Stone in a Darkroom

I have always loved the idea of seeing my photos on stone and other natural materials. So, a few months ago, I began googling how it could be done. This is how I discovered (and fell in love with) liquid emulsion. Liquid emulsion is photographic emulsion which you can melt down and paint on any surface. You can then expose an image and develop it using traditional darkroom chemicals. In this article, I would like to explain the process a little, so that if you are also interested in giving this fun process a go, you can!

Chlorophyll Prints by Binh Danh: An Interview

In the work of Binh Danh, art is space for the unnamed to be seen. When war is the theme every detail counts. How does one person tackle this massive issue, where death and the value of lives intersect? A one-man job becomes a job about other men. And so for his series "Immortality: The Remnants of the Vietnam and American War" he made chlorophyll prints to express the indelible mark of war on various lands. Soldiers and laymen whose faces and records have been archived are given another chance to be remembered.
