I’m lucky enough to have my list of favorite artists that I want to see live almost completely crossed off: Tori Amos, Radiohead and Silverchair, just to name a few. Last Summer, I added a band that I’ve been listening to since my Freshman Year in high school: Ween!
I know I had been to Bend before, but it had to have been years ago, so this trip was like the first time for me. It felt like a combination of 2 towns that I love and live near: it had the quaintness and old world feel of Jacksonville mixed with the modern and ultra urban happenings of Ashland (see my other locations). It was a one day road trip that felt like a week-long getaway, yielding some of what felt like the best pictures of my life!
The concert arena itself is right next to the water, an outdoor mini shopping center, and some open space where art walks are held (coincidentally, our brief visit coincided with one of these!). Our day could not have been any better: after arriving to the slightly overcast cold-but-not-so-cold-that-a-sweatshirt-is-required weather, we filled our empty tummies at Red Robin in their outdoor seating that literally overlooked the water. A Gardenburger and a couple of Absolute Lemonades later, and we were browsing the outdoor art, including photography, tie die, and jewelry creations of all sorts, shapes and sizes. The outdoor shopping center nearby included live music in the center, all kinda of unique stores, booths offering samples of food and dessert, and the architectural equivalent of what I would call an elite ski resort; tall brick and wood buildings of earthy, warm tones surrounded your every move.
When the concert was about to start, we barely had to walk any distance to get to the arena as it’s situated right in the same area as all this cool stuff. The one song we told ourselves we wanted to hear live more than anything – “The Grobe” – was not only played, but played FIRST!!! We heard the “ccchhh…ccchhh…ccchhh…ccchhh….” of the first 4 beats, the drum cymbals, and absolutely screamed our heads off! Thus began an evening of great music, singing and dancing, and making friends with the fellow ween-goers surrounding us in the front row (oh yes, we were pushed right up against the gate!…just how I like it). And none other than my LC-A+ was there with me to capture it all!!!
