Rideau Canal

Location: Province of Ontario, Canada
Date of Inscription: 2007

“The Rideau Canal, a monumental early 19th-century construction covering 202 km of the Rideau and Cataraqui rivers from Ottawa south to Kingston Harbour on Lake Ontario, was […] one of the first canals to be designed specifically for steam-powered vessels, also features an ensemble of fortifications. It is the best-preserved example of a slackwater canal in North America [and] the only canal dating from the great North American canal-building era of the early 19th century to remain operational along its original line with most of its structures intact.”

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump

Location: Province of Alberta, Canada
Date of Inscription: 1981

“In south-west Alberta, the remains of marked trails and an aboriginal camp, and a tumulus where vast quantities of buffalo (American Bison) skeletons can still be found, are evidence of a custom practised by aboriginal peoples of the North American plains for nearly 6,000 years. Using their excellent knowledge of the topography and of buffalo behaviour, they killed their prey by chasing them over a precipice; the carcasses were later carved up in the camp below.”

“A great concentration of ancestral Pueblo Indian dwellings, built from the 6th to the 12th century, can be found on the Mesa Verde plateau in south-west Colorado at an altitude of more than 2,600 m. Redwood National and State Parks

Location: Calilfornia, USA
Date of Inscription: 1980

“Redwood National Park comprises a region of coastal mountains bordering the Pacific Ocean north of San Francisco. Historic Centre of Puebla

Location: Puebla, New Mexico
Date of Inscription: 1987

“Puebla, which was founded ex nihilo in 1531, […] has preserved its great religious structures such as the 16th–17th-century cathedral and fine buildings like the old archbishop’s palace, as well as a host of houses with walls covered in tiles (azulejos). The new aesthetic concepts resulting from the fusion of European and American styles were adopted locally and are peculiar to the Baroque district of Puebla.”

Historic Centre of Morelia

Location: Michoacán, Mexico
Date of Inscription: 1991

“Built in the 16th century, Morelia is an outstanding example of urban planning which combines the ideas of the Spanish Renaissance with the Mesoamerican experience. Well-adapted to the slopes of the hill site, its streets still follow the original layout. More than 200 historic buildings, all in the region’s characteristic pink stone, reflect the town’s architectural history, revealing a masterly and eclectic blend of the medieval spirit with Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassical elements.”
