A fine EP with an interesting photo of a legendary band shot by a legendary photographer is released.

On this same day in 1966, Parlophone Records released The Beatles’ Nowhere Man EP in the United Kingdom. It contained four songs from The Beatles’ Rubber Soul album, namely ”Drive My Car,” “Michelle,” “You Won’t See Me,” and of course, the title track ”Nowhere Man.”

Nowhere Man did pretty well with a number four slot in the UK album charts, staying in the countdown for 18 weeks, despite the fact that it contained songs from an album that was released only six months prior.

You’ll be interested to know that the photo on the album cover was taken by famed British photographer Robert Whitaker, whose most celebrated work includes images of the Fab Four shot on different occasions between 1964 and 1966.

Mr. Whitaker had his fateful meeting with The Beatles, and their manager, Brian Epstein while the band was on tour in Australia in 1964. He was merely accompanying a journalist friend on an interview with Epstein, whom he photographed. The Beatles’ manager absolutely loved the photo that was published with the article, and invited Whitaker to become a staff photographer for NEMS records. Whitaker initially declined but eventually accepted the offer upon seeing The Beatles perform to a multitude of screaming fans.

The cover photo of the Nowhere Man EP has a rather comic twist. Only John Lennon seems to be having a good time with his guitar, and Ringo Starr seems tremendously displeased. Could it be because he doesn’t even have a drum stick, and made to sit on a pedestal?

Well there you have it—-a fine record with an interesting photo of one legendary band shot by one legendary photographer.
