Summer Hot Spots: The Submerse Landscapes at Grüner See, Austria

Have you ever thought about what happens in the valleys when the ice melts down from the mountains during summer? I haven’t until I found this amazing place in Austria – Grüner See (Green Lake in English). Start preparing your bags, because after this article, you’ll want to visit it!

Last year, around this time, I got introduced to one of the most amazing lakes that I’ve ever dove in: the Grüner See. For those who never heard about it, it is a lake in Styria, Austria, near the town of Tragoß. You can immediately realize the origin of its name, as soon as you see it – the emerald-green water.

In my case, we just gathered a big group of friends, prepared some sandwiches, games, books, and of course, a lot of cameras for an incredible day.

As you are probably thinking, it feels like heaven to dive in these blue translucent waters and that was exactly what I did when I arrived there. Although, I forgot that since the water comes from the snowmelt from the Karst Mountains, the temperature was far from inviting — 6-7 °C (43–45 °F). Don’t be fooled by the pictures, everyone was smiling in the water but deep inside, they were dying of cold. The maximum I could hold was around one or two minutes. I challenge you to try to hold longer!

During the spring, the lake reaches its maximum depth of around 12 m and you can see some benches and even a bridge submerse. If you like to dive, don’t forget all your equipment! And prepare all the cameras you can, specially the underwater cases. Oh, I really regret of not having an underwater case!

To arrive in this paradise, you can go from Vienna by car — it will take around 2 hours and you’ll have really nice roads (and I can assure you that the landscapes during the trip are also worth to see) and parking places; or by train till bruck/mur and take the bus (the bus doesn’t work on weekends).

Have you been there or thinking about going? Share your experience in the comment section! If you want to see some more pictures, check this album.
