Having scored five awards at the Cannes Lions festival and 17 international awards all in all, a short film for the launch of the Leica M-Monochrom in São Paulo has been making the rounds in the photography world. Rarely do we get to watch an advertisement with beautiful cinematography, which is most likely why a short black and white film entitled “Alma” (soul), produced for the launch of the Leica M-Monochrom in the São Paulo Leica Store, bagged a total of 17 international awards. The short film produced by Sentimental Filme scored five of these distinctions at this year’s Cannes Lions Festival, an event that has been considered as the Cannes Film Festival for advertisements.
“Alma” tells a first-person story of a camera that was born as Leica III in Germany and reborn as M-Monochrom many decades later. As Leica III, she became the partner of a famous war photographer (who we know very well), chronicling his life in and out of the perilous battle zones he scaled, until his (and also her) demise in 1954.
While the short film promotes the digital reincarnation of the classic Leica, it’s certainly interesting how it backtracks to tell the story of its legacy, don’t you think?
