Every year, sometime in the second half of May, the annual Antwerp fair takes place on the biggest open space in town. As soon as workers start building and the attractions arise, the excitement rises with it. By the time they are done, there’s a new village built in town: the Sinksenfoor has arrived and is ready to stay for 6 weeks straight. The perfect place to spend those first hot summer days of the year!
Every year, right around the time summer arrives, the biggest fair in Belgium takes place: the Antwerp Sinksenfoor. With over 150 attractions, it is probably even bigger then any of the regular theme parks we have. This fair has a long standing tradition, dating back to the 19th century. Obviously things have changed over time, with rides getting bigger and more spectacular every year!
There are a few rides that return every time, the most iconic being the giant Ferris Wheel. It might not be the highest or the fastest attraction, but it does give you a great view and it’s the one ride everybody can enjoy: from grandparents with their grand kids to teenagers who want to spend some quiet time with that special person they would like to get to know better.
Several rides take you up really high, some just make you fly in circles, while others spin you around like mad… all the while at stomach crunching heights!
Honestly, I have no urge whatsoever to actually go on any of the rides, least of all those spinning, turning, bone breaking speed machines. Just looking at them from a distance and taking pictures is plenty of excitement for me!
As any good carnie knows, people having this much fun need to be fed and watered. So there are plenty of options for a tasty bite — doesn’t matter whether you’re really hungry or whether you are just being lured in by the great, mouth watering scents.
The Sinksenfoor attracts a huge crowd: from locals, to out-of-towners and even an international crowd visits the fair every year. Most people come here to have a blast, but even if you’re like me, there’s plenty of atmosphere and excitement in the air to have a great time just walking around. What better way to spend a beautiful summer afternoon?!
