While you snap away in pure pleasure with your precious LC-A+ or LC-W, you might want to know about the Russian wonder that started it all—-the Lomo Kompakt Automat, more popularly known as the Lomo LC-A.

The Lomo LC-A was borne out of the need to provide Soviet photo enthusiasts with an affordable device that they could use to capture priceless memories and document scenic explorations. And so, to fulfill this imminent need, the mass production of the LC-A began on June 19, 1984.

The Lomo LC-A was modeled after the Cosina CX-1, a Japanese compact camera. Only 1,100 units per month were initially and exclusively produced for the Russian market. It gained popularity soon enough and was stocks were eventually transported to Poland, Ukraine, Czechoslovakia, as well as Cuba.

By 1991, the Lomo LC-A was no longer in production. Luckily, a group of Austrian coeds wandering in Prague found it in one of those vintage camera shops. After a few rolls of experimental shooting and creating a buzz about delightfully saturated images, more and more people craved for their own LC-A. Hence, the Lomographic Society was born.
