Batanes Province

Batanes is one of the most beautiful provinces in the Philippines. It is also the smallest, both in land area and number of people. Located in the northernmost part of the archipelago, Batanes is about 190 kilometers away from Taiwan. For a long time I dreamed of going there but I just couldn’t save enough funds for it.

It’s not a very expensive place to visit, but I wanted to stay there for at least a week, maybe even two weeks. It is such a serene place. So when the opportunity came to go there for a few days, I excitedly said yes and I brought my cameras and lots of film. From Manila, my friends and I took an Asian Spirit flight to Basco, Batanes. There we stayed at one of the hotels. Cell phones work in Basco, and some places have internet access. Cheaper accommodation options are also available. The weather is unpredictable there but everyone always expects rainy and windy days.

Fortunately, there was no rain when we were there. Up on the hills the wind gets very cold. There are many nice things to photograph in Batanes. Among them are the unique architecture of Ivatan houses made of lime and stone with cogon grass roofs. There are also beautiful rolling hills, sandy beaches, rocky shorelines, quaint towns with pretty doors and windows, old churches, and friendly people. It is a safe place for both locals and visitors.

There is hardly any crime, and nothing gets stolen. There is even a place called Honesty Coffee Shop, where there are no waiters or attendants. Instead, you just get whatever food you want and put your money in the box. But when you go to Batanes, you must bring lots of cash because if you run out, there’s no way for you to get any more, you can’t exchange your dollars for local currency, and you can’t use your credit card. It is not a party place, so don’t expect bars and beach parties. It is really just a nice place to relax.
