The Season of Skate: Lomo at the X Games

2013-06-11 2

It’s the season of skate. The summertime when the concrete beach becomes use-able once more by those accustomed to life on 4 wheels! So to kickstart the snapping of it, we headed with an LC-A and multi-lens camera in hand to capture the world’s best skateboarders in action at the X Games in Barcelona. Yep, that’s a lot of action! From the skate on the street to tricks in the park and airs out the vert. The biggest names in skate were all in one place to the delight of our eyes and cameras!

Last month, the skateboarding world headed to Barcelona for the first ever X Games summer stop in Europe. Normally based across in sunny Los Angeles, skaters, participators and spectators this side of the pond were thrilled to host the action from the 16th -19th of May. Europe’s chance to see the faces and tricks of names such as; Nyjah Huston, Ryan Sheckler and Paul Rodriguez compete for Street League glory, as well as witness mega ramp, vert legends and expert bowl riders doing what they do best. It was all sorts of skate in the one place, with the contests battled out at the ex-Olympic site of Montjuic. A picturesque playground that was made use of.

Take a look at a few snaps caught on the Lomo LC-A during Street League practice, when only a few eyes were allowed on the course. Nyjah practicing his winning ways, Cole keeping things technical, Taylor giving it a stylish flair, and Sheckler giving it all his pop.

It wasn’t just the guys throwing down. For the first time ever, girls were given the chance to compete in the park. They showed the world that girl skate not only exists but it’s got some moves too! From concrete competitor Lizzie Armanto, to vert/bowl legend Mimi Knoop, even first ever pro skater Elissa Steamer made it along. Let’s hope for more girl events at future X Games. See some of the style from the ladies:

No trip to the world’s biggest action sports event would be complete without some multi-lens shots. Our first time trying out the multi-lens, multi-shot camera, it was tricky for the shutter to keep up with the speed of skate, but fun to test out!

Don’t miss the action! X Games is back in Europe for a second summer stop in Munich from the 27th June.

The Lomo LC-A is the camera that started the Lomography movement. With full controls and wide ISO range, this automatic gem is perfect for beginners and professionals alike. Get your own Refurbished LC-A in our Shop!

Browsing through the Lomography website, you can find a lot of redscale shots, which are all done on color negative films. I asked myself if it’s possible to redscale a slide or chrome film and then cross process it. (And yes, it is.) In this tipster I’m going to teach you how to create the bloodiest homemade redscale film I've ever come across.

    Trusty Bags for Trusty Cameras

We spend copious amounts of time stalking camera forums and researching specifications that "hunter" seems a more fitting term than "collector." And yet, when the time comes to pack all this game—the new or thrillingly ancient cameras—we DIY padding on the spot. (Guilty of trying to avoid the unappealing gear bag from the department store.) Last year though we stocked up on camera bags that are as cool as they are protective. Here are some of them.
