Shoot Your Daddy: Changes Over Time

2013-06-15 5

My dad has changed a lot over time in ways I never imagined.

If you were like me, you may not have known a lot about your parents from the time before you were born. When I was a kid, my dad worked hard all day and usually came home to fall asleep on the couch. On the weekends he was out on the back patio with the grill, drinking beer and sports on the radio or TV. He was a stoic man who rarely showed strong emotion and never weakness, although he was quick with the corny dad jokes. He would only praise us or scold me in private. The man was a rock you could lean and depend on in any storm. As he became a grandfather, the shell began to crack. I have never seen his eyes light up the way they do now when he sees his granddaughter, and I only ever saw my dad cry this year.

I recently found a box of photos with pictures of my father from the 1970’s. Here was a guy who had a life and style before I was born. He actually sat down and told me some stories attached to the pictures. I never imagine that my dad was a trouble maker in school. He was a practical joker and often had my grandmother bailing him out of situations. As a new father myself, will my daughter know I used to get scraped up as a skateboarder, got pretty rebellious, and wore my hair pretty crazy or will I try to be a better example as I found out my dad was trying to do.

Here are some of the pictures I found.

Turns out my dad had his motorcycle period:

A sense of style I never imagined:

My dad wanted to see the world. Instead of working in a steel mill or car plant in Ohio his whole life as his classmates planned to do, he joined the US Navy. He proudly served for 26 years and provided for his family.

He was a loving father.

Today, he is overjoyed at being a grandfather to my little girl, CJ.

I more proud than ever to have my dad. He is a real father and good man.
