The Fantastic Minolta X-700

1

A fantastic camera that deserves more attention than it gets. The results are magnificent and the camera is super fun to use. The only problem you may have, is getting it back from your friends when they snatch it to take a shot with it.

By some twist of fate, I was offered a free Minolta X-700. I still don’t understand how it happened, and for the longest time I thought it was a prank someone was playing on me. I got a message one day from a woman who has seen my YouTube videos and she asked if I would want a Minolta X-700 for free. She said she collected old cameras and just had so many that she was wanting to get rid of one and she said she knew I would take good care of it.

Normally I would think that something like this is too good to be true, but there comes a point when you have to just accept that people are amazing and do kind things every once in a while, so I said “Sure!”, and in about a week a huge box arrived at my doorstep with the beautiful Minolta X-700 inside. At first I was a little worried that it would be too hard for me to operate and understand, and that getting a good shot would be near impossible, but that wasn’t the case at all!

My first roll of shots turned out a little wobbly, but that was to be expected since I was just learning how to use the camera and all of it’s SLR goodness!

The next roll was much better! I decided to slap some B&W film into the camera and see what happened. The results were nothing short of brilliant, I was very pleased at how this camera reacted to B&W film.

Now that I was getting the hang of things I figured it was time to try out some more CN film. The camera really feels like an extension of ones self after you get the hang of how to use it.

I cannot believe how I got this camera and I cannot believe how fantastic the pictures are that it takes. The Minolta X-700 is my favorite SLR that I have ever used, and it is my go-to camera whenever there’s a really important event or moment in my life that I want to capture on film.

If you get the opportunity to own or use one of these cameras, don’t hesitate! It makes having an SLR and using one as easy as it can be. It even has an automatic setting so that you don’t have to worry about the shutter speed, it will do that for you. I truly love this camera and appreciate the kind human who sent me it.

5 Snapshot Moments on the Road

A road trip is a celebration of little freedoms. It’s a chance to break out of a rut and to be a little unruly. All the mischief may be off limits to the camera, so the things we do photograph need to serve our memory well: They must convey the relief, fun and color of our secret sprees.

Doug DuBois on My Last Day at Seventeen

Doug DuBois spent five summers photographing the small neighborhood of Russell Heights in Ireland to capture the essence of coming of age: the inevitable loss of youth and the imminent transition into adulthood. Those four years resulted in his latest book, My Last Day At Seventeen. The book is a visual tale told through a collection of photographs and gives an alternative perspective through a comic narrative around the same subject. This creative combination of two distinct narratives in one book not only works wonderfully in visual terms; it also serves as an essential tool that lets the reader dig deeper into the story being told, making one go back to the book over and over again, yet from a new perspective, every single time.
