Lomography Day Trips: Bali, Indonesia

One of the more famous tourist destinations when it comes to relaxation in Southeast Asia, the province of Bali in Indonesia has more to it than meets the eye.

Bali is one of the 34 provinces in the Indonesian archipelago. Its main island is located east of Java, separated by the Bali Strait, and west of Lombok, separated by the Lombok Strait.

Known for its beaches and its rich culture and arts, Bali is the largest tourist destination in Indonesia. In fact, the tourism industry has contributed significantly to the growth and development of the island’s economy.

The provincial capital of Bali is the city of Denpasar, located on the southern part of the island. Here, you can find places like Pasar Badung, the biggest traditional market in the island.

On the other hand, beach bums and sun worshipers head down to the beaches of Kuta further down the island. Also, if you find yourself there between April and October, you can also catch some waves!

For those looking for another attraction, Bali also has its share of temples that provide a glimpse of the spiritual and cultural background of the people.

One of these temples is Pura Tirta Empul, a Hindu temple famous for its holy water where people — tourists and locals alike — go for purification. Another is the Uluwatu Temple which is set on the cliff bank in the south, and Pura Tanah Lot which is located on Tanah Lot, a rock formation off the coast.

And of course, there’s the hill town of Ubud, which rose to prominence thanks to the 2010 film Eat, Pray, Love. Located at the heart of the island, Ubud is the cultural capital of Bali.
