Lomopedia: Horizon S3 Pro

2013-06-28 1

If the Horizon S3 Pro looks familiar, it’s because it’s actually the father of Lomography’s Horizon Perfekt. Learn more about the Russian ancestry of every lomographer’s Perfekt panoramic shooter after the jump!

Before the Lomography Horizon cameras, there was the Horizon S3 Pro, from which the Perfekt was based; and even before that, there was the Horizon 202, the successor of the older Horizont and from which the Kompakt was based. But, according to camera experts, the Soviets developed panoramic cameras from as far back as the late 1950s, the most popular from the period being the KMZ FT-2. Here’s a quick timeline:

1958 – 1965: KMZ FT-2
1967 – 1973: Horizont
1991 – 2003: Horizon 202
2003: Horizon S3 Pro
2005: Horizon Perfekt, Horizon Kompakt

Originally called Horizon 203, the Horizon S3 Pro was manufactured by the Krasnogorski Mekhanicheskii Zavod (KMZ) in 2003 (and introduced in the market a year later) as an improved version of the Horizon 202. The most modern-looking of all the pre-Perfekt and Kompakt Horizon Cameras, the S3 Pro has a smooth surface with rounded corners. It retains the swivel lens that swings to 120° from right to left, but its battery-free clockwork mechanism operates smoothly and quietly compared to that of the Horizon 202. Its lens swing comes in two speeds: the slow swing corresponds to shutter speeds 1/8 to 1 second, while the fast swing corresponds to shutter speeds 1/30 to 1/250 second. The two concentric discs below the built-in viewfinder should be turned to set the aperture and shutter speed.

In 2005, Lomographic Society International partnered with KMZ-Zenit to introduce the Kompakt and Perfekt panoramic cameras. And the rest, as they say, is history.
