The Other Side of May Day in Bandung, Indonesia

2013-05-21 3

Every May 1st, all labor workers in Jawa Barat (West Java), Indonesia come to Gedung Sate, Bandung to speak out their mind. I try to capture the other side of the annual demonstration. Check out my photos after the jump.

I still didn’t get the unique moment so I used my yellow and green filter, hoping they will create another side of the demonstration photo.

Then comes the new group which made all the journalists take photos of them. When I snapped this I thought it was just a so-so photo. But, look at the hand of the second man from the left.

Actually, policewomen are not so special in demonstration events, but in Indonesia they’re very special because it’s a new phenomenon since a couple years ago. Unfortunately, when they came to the demonstrators and give them candy and mineral water, I forgot to capture the scene with my Horizon Perfekt.

This one is my fave other side photo of the event, showing cendol, the traditional beverage from Bandung, covered by Baygon (mosquito disinfectant product) umbrella.

This man who collects the plastic trash to sell it again to make ends meet really touched me. He didn’t join to demonstrate but he is the true hard worker.

This beggar smiled at me when I snapped her as she begged for money from the tired journalist who sat in front of me.

When the demonstration was over I decided to follow the punk community who also joined the event because I haven’t taken photos of them yet. When I walked through Marsinah avatar poster, I was too far from Marsinah. I forget that my Horizon Perfekt didn’t have a zoom option. Marsinah was a worker who was brutally killed because she spoke about workers’ right during the new regime in Indonesia. She became the icon of Mayday demonstrations and just like many political assassination cases in Indonesia, her case has not yet been solved.

I saw the stray cat seller in front of me and I thought maybe it’s quite another view of the demonstration.

Finally, I realized that the word “kerja” (work) matters to me — 6 years unemployed, with a Journalism degree who dropped out from Magister Communication Universitas Padjajaran two weeks ago because I postponed the last chapter of my thesis since 2009.
