Considering a more heady and exotic change of scenery? Then imagine yourself surrounded by solid ochre-hued buildings and wares and spices in souks. All of these and more in the city of Marrakesh, Morocco!
Marrakesh or Marrakech is a major city, economic centre and tourist destination located in the Kingdom of Morocco in northwest Africa.
Historically, it is the most important of the four former imperial cities of kingdom; while contemporarily, the remaining old town area of the city has been branded as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
And of course, there is the heart of Marrakesh: Jemma el-Fnaa, the center of city activity and trade, and one of the biggest squares in all of Africa. It is alive and active, day and night, with a diverse number of stalls that sell pipes, herbs, spices, carpets and everything in between.
Aside from the city square, you can also find a part of Marrakesh’s history in the Mellah, the old Jewish district. It houses its own share of gardens and synagogues, as wells as souks. Presently, the area is much more peaceful.
If you’re a tourist and you would like to stay in the Mellah, one of the recommended hotels is the Riad Dar One…
Or if you would like to take a breather from all the exotic sites, Hotel La Mamounia and its Art Deco vibe can provide you a bit of company.
