SuperSampler vs. ActionSampler: A Battle of Multilens Cameras

2013-05-20 2

I love multilens cameras. I love the excitement they bring and I love how they are all about fun. Forget about everything, let’s just jump around and capture ourselves moving.

I love SuperSampler. It was my first lomography camera and it is the camera me and my friends enjoy the most. I have it with me on every trip I go and I probably have jumping photos from practically every place I have ever been. This is probably why I expected so much from ActionSampler when I bought it. They are almost the same, the only difference is the width of the 4 photos they produce. The SuperSampler has horizontal photos, while ActionSampler produces more square ones.

Next to that I have noticed other differences, for example — it takes 2 seconds to open all 4 lenses with SuperSampler, but with ActionSampler it takes less than a second (that is the case with mine at least). That means you cannot capture the movement as well as with a SuperSampler. Also, SuperSampler produces quite crisp images (if you consider it’s a plastic camera), you can literally throw it in the air while shooting and all the images are sharp. But with ActionSampler, it happens almost every time, even if the camera is not moving in my hands, one of the photos is not sharp. It just doesn’t produce the same quality images as SuperSampler does.

Let me compare some photos so you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Jumping. If you own one of this cameras you’ll probably did some jumping already. See, how ActionSapler captures a lot less than SuperSampler?
Swinging? The same problem.

Your pets. Yes, they are beautiful but you have to choose — would you rather they’re moving on your photo or have the same 4 photos in one frame?

I also noticed my ActionSampler doesn’t like snow that much.

Nature. You can do really nice panoramic shots with your SuperSampler.

But there is one thing where ActionSampler actually beats SuperSampler: Making movies out of your photos. Yes, you have more moving in your SuperSampler photos, but those are horizontal photos, that don’t look that good in a video. Take a look what I’ve done last year: I took my ActionSampler to Rock in Park Festival and I took my SuperSampler to Inmusic festival. I actually prefer my ActionSampler video.

My ActionSampler video (music by the Subways – We don’t need money to have a good time):

My SuperSampler video (music by Retro Stefson – Kimba):

I prefer SuperSampler, I admit it. But that doesn’t mean I should discourage you from buying an ActionSampler. It’s actually a really fun camera and you’ll have lots of good times with it.

The Actionsampler Chrome snaps up a series of four images on one 35mm print. This multilens camera records your subject’s movement and is now coated in sleek silver. See it with the rest of our Multilens cameras here!

Nice videos! Taking horizontal pictures with your Supersampler would actually give you the same aspect ratio than the lomokino.
