Take Me Out to the Ball Game: My Family's Analogue Past Time

For me, nothing beats getting away from the digital grind like having a family outing to the baseball park for an afternoon of good fun and socializing.

Since I was a little boy, my father and I have always had one real tradition: every summer we’d have a baseball game or two at the ball park. He was in the military and was gone a lot, but when baseball season came around he would take leave and go to the game. Sometimes we were two hours away from the nearest stadium, but we would load the station wagon and head to the nearest park.

I have had the pleasure of sitting in the stands while the Cleveland Indians, Pittsburgh Pirates, Oakland A’s, California Angels and San Diego Padres played at their home fields and loved every minute of it.

I have never been much of a sports fan. My dad was usually not around for football or basketball seasons. He is not big on basketball and although he is a super American football fan, I never caught the fever. I guess it was the magic of seeing live games at the park. My dad would get me excited days before going to the game. We would play catch out in the yard or park and get to the game early that day. It was our bonding time. Dad would buy me a hotdog or some snack and we would make a thing out of singing during the 7th inning stretch and doing the wave with the crowd.

We no longer live somewhere with access to a professional baseball teams. Hawaii at one time had a minor league team but that was dissolved long before I got here. We didn’t go to games for years. Teenagers then become twenty-somethings that are not so interested in hanging out with their dads. But in my 30’s I felt nostalgic when passing the University of Hawaii stadium. At the time it was $6 dollar seats and cheap cold beer. Who doesn’t love cheap cold beer (if you are of age)?

So for the past seven years, dad has been calling me up when there is a game he wants to see and we head out to the college game. I still get excited. We go early and watch the teams warm up. We talk about old times, how we are doing and maybe a little politics, but we bond. We let ourselves relax and enjoy being away from computers. We chant for our UH Warriors and forget about worries.

This year it has been a very wet spring in Hawaii so many home games have been canceled, but if there is a chance of good weather, Take Me Out to the Ball Game!

Take me out to the ball game,
Take me out with the crowd.
Buy me some peanuts and cracker jack,
I don't care if I never get back,
Let me root, root, root for the home team,
    If they don't win it's a shame.
For it's one, two, three strikes, you're out,
    At the old ball game
