Soft pink sand, interesting little coves and coconut palms rustling in salty sea air of the unending Atlantic, Bermuda’s south shore beaches in March are a perfect quiet walk when you just want to get away from it all.
If your idea of the perfect spring break is wild beach parties at mega resort hotels, swim-up bars serving all-inclusive drinks 24 hours a day and throngs of sweaty, scantily clad 18- to 25-year-olds dancing until the sunrise, then Bermuda is NOT where you want to be.
According to locals, expats and tourists alike, the best beaches in Bermuda are found along the south shore. While the beaches do get busy during the peak summer months, they tend to be mostly empty and quiet the rest of the year. On a two-hour solo photowalk I did this past March, I only saw two other people on the beach and surrounding trails the whole time I was out. Locals won’t even think about entering the blue Atlantic waters that surround the island until late May (although this might also be because from mid-March to mid-April, the water teams with dangerous man-o-war jellyfish).
Bermuda is a small island, so the south shore beaches are pretty easy to get to from anywhere on the island. You can easily walk along the shore from Mermaid Beach at the northeast end down to the very picturesque Horseshoe Bay Beach at the southwest end of South Shore Park in 30 minutes or less. It’s only about 2 kilometers long.
But do take your time. Island life, especially in the off-season, can be wonderfully slow. While you walk, enjoy feeling the pink sand under your feet and between your toes. Look around and explore the rocky coves and cliffs sculpted by the wind and waves. Listen to the ocean. Smell that clean sea air. Relax.
Bermuda’s south shore beaches might not be to everyone’s liking. There are better spring break parties elsewhere, there isn’t anywhere to shop and there are no bars on the beach (though there is a public bathroom at Chaplin Bay). But if you want some peaceful solitude, I highly recommend a quiet walk along the South Shore.
