Doubles With Love: The Planned and The Accidental

Sometimes, you make some effort, sometimes they just occur by accident! Different cameras bring about different types of doubles but whether or not they are successful, everyone loves a double-exposed photo!

My very first camera was a birthday present given to me by my sister. When I first tested out my Diana Mini, I took it on an island holiday with me to Pulau Redang on the East Coast state of Terengganu. As I was entirely new to Lomography and analogue photography at the time, I basically didn’t know what I was doing the whole 4 days I was snapping with the Diana Mini.

I did not turn the dial all the way through (also due to my slippery, sunscreen-covered fingers) and as such, almost the whole roll turned out to be either overlapping or double exposed. Then, I was utterly disappointed. Looking back, I couldn’t be happier.

Sometimes double exposures can literally speak a thousand words:

But of course, with time comes practice and with practice…sometimes you still result in failures. When I got my Sprocket Rocket, I decided to utilize the two dials and did a whole roll first before rewinding it to create an entire album of double exposures. That definitely did not turn out well.

Fortunately, sometimes with good planning and more often than not sheer luck, you get fantastic, trippy results like these:

The biggest payoff though, is still the extra effort and careful planning that you put in. Those are the shots that will leave you absolutely satisfied with the effect of double exposures. They are the shots that make you smile when you think of them, and the ones that leave your friends impressed!
