Chinese New Year Celebrations Under the Rain

As it was raining on the day my city had Chinese New Year celebrations, I decided that I would be happiest with an underwater camera. Take a look at some of the photos I took after the jump!

I was determined to go the Chinese New Year celebrations and take lots of photos, but it was raining and I was nervous about using my cameras. Then, I remembered I have the perfect camera for this weather: the Canon Sure Shot A1 underwater camera. I put a yellow gel over the flash to counteract the grey weather and set the camera on auto flash.

Unfortunately, the shutter kept on getting stuck, perhaps a bad contact with the flash. But, I was determined to take lots of photos, as I said, and did not let this small hiccup spoil the day. It was so crowded, it was almost impossible to see anything. But, I also did not let that spoil the day and photographed what I could, among the open umbrellas, with the camera that was getting stuck, etc. etc. I also discovered that people didn’t seem bothered to be dazzled by my yellow flash, although you can see in some of the photos that a few people were looking at me and my camera with a certain amount of curiosity!

I used a Lomography Color Negative 400 that my Canon seemed to like. The colors came out warm and with a pleasant depth, despite the rain and general grey-ness. Actually, the rain probably added interest to the day.

Take a look at the photos below:

The red lanterns hanging across the western buildings looks gorgeous. Nice shots!

I like the idea of the yellow gel to counter act the grey. I am going to try that next time it is gloomy.
