Let’s face it, not everyone has the knack for cheesy lines and the mainstream-type of romance — in fact, some of us might be even allergic to all the sugar. Which is why this installment of Midweek Movies brings you five films that you can watch on your Valentine’s date night, guilt-free and without pressure!
LARS AND THE REAL GIRL (2007)
Lars is a sweet but socially awkward young man who becomes romantically involved with an anatomically-correct blow-up doll named Bianca, much to the chagrin of his family. Convinced by a psychologist that the only cure for the problem is to go with the flow, Lars’ family, along with the rest of the town, treat Bianca as if she was a real person for Lars’ sake.
SEEKING A FRIEND FOR THE END OF THE WORLD (2012)
A 70-mile-wide asteroid is set to collide with Earth and the last efforts to save humanity have failed. Despite this development, and the subsequent leaving of his wife, Dodge Petersen’s life remains the same. One night, he notices his neighbour Penny crying on the fire escape, distressed she won’t be able to see her family in England one last time. Knowing someone who could fly her to England, Dodge tells her about this on the condition that she help him find his high school sweetheart first.
SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED (2012)
Wanted: Somebody to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. P.O. Box 91 Ocean View, WA 99393. You’ll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before.
Darius is an intern at a Seattle magazine who accompanies one of the writers to investigate the story behind a classified ad of a man asking for a time-travelling companion.
WRISTCUTTERS: A LOVE STORY (2006)
After committing suicide, Zia finds himself in limbo which is disappointingly, very much like the life he left behind, only slightly worse. After sometime, he learns from a past acquaintance that his ex-girlfriend has also committed suicide, so he enlists the help of his new friend Eugene to find for her. Along the way, they meet a girl named Mikal who is looking for the “people in charge”, insisting that her arrival in limbo has been a mistake.
Juno MacGuff is a feisty teenager whose world gets thrown upside-down due to an unplanned pregnancy. Upon changing her mind on getting an abortion, she decides to put the baby up for adoption, all the while sorting out her relationship with her family, the awkward Paulie Bleeker, the boy who got her pregnant, and the future adoptive parents of her child.
Now, there you have it folks! What do you think of our alternative date movie line up? Is it a hit or a miss? Do you have other movie recommendations that can keep the Valentine’s spirit light, but not too sugary? Leave them below!
P.S. Just in case you’re not too keen on this list — and in romance in general — here’s a video featuring a mashup of various cinematic breakups aptly titled, The Anti-Valentine’s Day Mashup.
