Table for Two: Talad Rot Fai

If Chatuchak Market (aka JJ Market) is the ‘die die must visit’ weekend day market in Bangkok, then the nearby Talad Rot Fai takes the crown as the most unique ‘indie’ market that makes it the perfect date location.

Located within walking distance from the famous shopping Chatuchak market, Talad Rot Fai is the latest haunt for antique hunters and retro lovers to browse and bargain for vintage collectibles, reproductions, furnitures and fashions.

The market, which opens from 2 PM to past midnight on Saturday and Sunday, sits on an abandoned old Railway Station owned by State Railway Thailand. ‘Talad Rot Fai’ which literally means Train Market in Thai language.

Sprawled all over the market, store owners hawk their vintage wares in rustic-looking stores, or old convertibles. The market offers a variety of vintage goods for sale, from old records, to vintage furniture; analogue cameras and unique clothes. Given the wide variety of things for sale, it really takes a pair of seasoned eyes to sniff out the good stuff.

The market was set up by antique lovers Thanayut ‘Troy’ and Khun Phirot, to rent the warehouse from the Railway Ministry to sell their antiques. Due to the availability of space, they decided to invite people to sell their stuff for free the first couple of months. It was so so successful and popular that it has now become a permanent fixture in the Bangkok night market scene.

Dining here, you will be spoilt for choice as the market offers a variety of affordable dining options, such as traditional thai green curry noodles, retro english-style cafes, and a whole section of street food. So, if you’re looking for a place to impress that indie-chic, retro-loving other half of yours this Valentine’s weekend, look no further than Talad Rot Fai. After taking her here, she will be convinced the both of you are a match made in indie heaven.
