Crazy, Imaginative, Cutting Edge and FREEDOM! I choose those words to describe LIGHT PAINTING! Every photographer would like have extraordinary, genuine photos. Light Painting is an autonomous space in the photography world, offering and challenging every photographers to express her or himself with what so called Lights. And i would like share my experiences with LIGHT PAINTING!
Shall we begin…
The most important thing that you need to do Light Painting (LP) and this one thing called IMAGINATION. This is the foundation of LP. It’s slightly different with capturing moments with your camera, instead is there is huge difference in my opinion. In LP we are not capturing moments, instead, we make A moment. We will be on the same stage with those geniuses like Pablo Picasso, Rembrandt and other artisans. We could go with Conceptual or Spontaneity when we do LP.
D or D (Dim or Darkness)
The space that will give lights freedom and enhance its most maximum potential is Darkness or Dim. That’s is why LP has always been conducted in such environment or situations. It is LP’s holy ground!
Long Exposure Shot
This is LP’s twin sister, if we couldn’t say, this is the main form of photography technique of LP. By giving extensive time for the aperture to open, it’s giving way to record light in its movement. into film. The best thing to do this is set your camera to the slowest speed or go for Bulb mode. Because what we intend to do is making consistent and repetitive light trails
Low Film Speed (ASA)
We need as slowest as possible film speed to do LP, because what we would like to record is the light’s movement. Therefor we need less sensitive film toward light, because LP could be done only with Long Exposure Shots. If we use fast film (ASA 400 up) it will end up burning your film a.k.a you’ve got nothing. We might want to use ASA 100 films or less for maximum result.
Pattern and Motives
Usually for easy first attempts on LP you could draw in a pattern or go for motives. Why I suggest this because it’s important to get used to measuring in dark or dim situations. Once you got this its very easy to do improvisations
When we shoot on dark or dim situation we will go opening our lens as wide as possible, but in LP you need to go in reverse, because the extensive time you need to perform LP you need to limit the lights that will go to your film through your lens.
We need this things. To minimize shake and tremor to the camera while we are doing LP.
Definitely need this also, unless you had friend that would like to hold you camera shutter during the LP.
This is the most important element on LP, we might want to use various kind or type of flashlight to paint or other lights that consistent.
This is important, The credit in LP is go for the one who doing the painting, not the one who took the shots. But of course we would like to share the glory to those who already help us in photo making, especially to those who hold the shutter.
