Blue Springs: Home to Manatees

The Blue Springs State Park in Florida covers more than 2,600 acres, and includes the largest spring on the St. Johns River. The park is a designated manatee refuge, and the home to many manatees from November through March.

My boyfriend and his family have a tradition of celebrating their Thanksgivings camping in Blue Springs, Florida. This past Thanksgiving I was invited to come along, and boy, was it worth it. I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am a big fan of Manatees and at a certain point I was able to count up to ten in one spot.

This is possible, because Blue Springs is home to the largest spring on the St. Johns River, and during the winter, the water around the Springs maintains a constant temperature of 72 degrees Fahrenheit, making the Springs the prime vacation spot of choice for Manatees.

On top of that, the park and surrounding areas are just beautiful. When we weren’t rabidly searching for Manatees, we went kayaking along the river. There were blue skies, blue water, green trees and lily pads, and plenty of wildlife making it a fantastic place to take photos.

If you ever get the chance to spend a couple days here, you totally should!
