Checking Out Chinatown in Singapore

In Singapore, the Lomography Gallery Store is located in the Chinatown area — a vibrant location where clashes of cultures could be observed. To welcome the Chinese New Year, Chinatown has put on its most vibrant outfit!

Kung Hei Fat Chui!

Last weekend, I made my trip down to Chinatown to bring a friend to the Local Lomography Store. After that, we took a stroll in Chinatown to admire the mesmerizing decoration lights, and indulge ourselves in the festival’s atmosphere.

Chinese New Year is around corner, and Chinatown in Singapore is in its most lively period, preparing to celebrate the coming of a brand new Lunar Year. This year is the Year of the Snake, the sixth animal of the 12 Chinese Zodiacs. A big snake decoration about 108 meters long, and made up of about five thousand hand-crafted red cube lanterns, slithers itself across the street. Each of the red cube lanterns has one cute zodiac cartoon on it.

On the adjacent street, where the Local Gallery Store settles, is a snake sculpture, which consists of 850 yellow sky lanterns, weaving itself above the busy North Bridge Road. These two snake sculptures may be nominated in the Singapore’s record book, too!

Along the shopping streets, beautiful home decorations such as lanterns, LED lights, artificial plum flowers, and many more could be seen everywhere. And Bak Gua!

One of the most interesting features in Chinatown is the wishing tree in front of Chinatown Point. Donate a minimum amount two Singapore Dollars, and you get to write your wishes on the tag which is attached with a string with mandarin orange soft toy. After you are done with your writing, throw the mandarin orange so that it would hang itself onto the wishing tree. Only when your ‘wish’ is hung on the branches of tree, will your wishes be successfully made. I am lucky to try only once!
