Zorki 6 and Rollei 400S: A Perfect Combination for a Winter Day
4 10 Share TweetMy Zorki 6 is a terrific camera for street photography! A little and precise rangefinder, with a classic lens, a Russian clone of the famous Leica Elmar 50/3,5. Together with a Rollei 400S, an high contrast film with a spectral sensitivity extended to the near infrared, is a perfect combinations for street photography in a winter day, when the sun is pale or covered by clouds, or in the presence of a mild winter mist.
Last Sunday, I went to Milan to meet my friends lavale1974 and biciclettaverde, and together we took a walk along the Navigli area (water channels), one of the most characteristic areas of the city, marked by the presence of restaurants, stalls, markets and art galleries. I took with me my Zorki 6 camera equipped with an Industar 22 lens. This is a Russian clone of the famous Leica Elmar 50/3.5 with some modifications (for example a different position of the diaphragm blades, but with almost identical rendition) with vintage tones, and very sharp (it is a Tessar scheme, 4 lenses in 3 groups).
After a lunch in a local pizzeria, we walked along the channel between a long line of stalls; here you can find many interesting objects, such as analog cameras, radio, toys, photography books, old prints, antiques, and other collectibles for all tastes!
I wanted to have high contrasted photos so I used the Rollei 400S film, developed in Rodinal R09 at 1+25 dilution (the strongest choice, to have both contrast and high acutance). I love the sharp grain that I can obtain with this classic developer!
Along the Naviglio, there are many street artists. As you know, I like to photograph hands. Here’s a tribute to a pleasant street musician!

Even in the middle of the afternoon with faint sunlight and a general low contrast, this film allows to obtain full grey tones scale on the negative!
The extended sensitivity spectrum in the near infrared (up to 750 nm) is very interesting. I used this film without filters. Good results even for portraits!
Whatever is your preferred camera, whatever is your preferred film, the most important thing is that when you take a picture, do it with your heart!
