Henryton State Hospital, known as Henryton Tuberculosis Sanitarium, is a now abandoned hospital complex located in Marriottsville, Maryland built in 1922.

The original complex consisted of six main brick buildings and one utility plant. The maximum capacity for the sanitarium in the mid 1930s was 400, but due to an over flow of patients, a series of white stone buildings were built to accompany the six brick houses. However, but by the time they were completed in 1946, tuberculosis rates had dropped.

In 1963, Henryton Tuberculosis Sanitarium was converted into the Henryton State Hospital, where it served as a facility for the treatment and training of those with mental health issues. The decline of Henryton was But due largely to the turn over of mental health care to private outpatient facilities rather than institutionalization, Henryton had less than 100 patients, so by 1985, the hospital closed completely.

Henryton State Hospital is one of the many abandoned hospitals within the DC – Baltimore area, and is currently one of the most well known when it comes to urban exploration. The complex is located in the Patapsco State Park.

Access to Henryton is possible by parking off of Marriottsville Rd by the train tracks in a dirt parking lot designated for the Patapsco State Park. After parking, it’s a leisurely mile walk down the train tracks and through the Henryton Tunnel, which make for excellent photos themselves.

Shortly after walking through the tunnel, you’ll see a dirt road off to the right. Walking up the hill next to it will take you straight up to the Henryton Complex. I recommend wearing good shoes to avoid the broken glass and a dust mask or a respirator if you’re worried about asbestos. A couple of the buildings are gigantic and have hallways that go on forever. Bring a flashlight (and definitely a flash!) if you want and expect to run into other explorers if you go on the weekend.

And if you do decide to check it out, bring plenty of film, because you will want it!

Love this article - checked it out over the weekend. There keep being rumors and stories that they're going to tear it down, but so far it's still standing.
