Golden Gate Bridge: Impressions on Film

A morning shoot of the Golden Gate Bridge on one December day. Two cameras, four different films, and an enthusiasm to capture it’s beauty.

Two Decembers ago, I went to visit my dear friend Lady (yes, that is her name) in San Francisco. It was a really nice December weekend, and the weather was to my liking — mid 50s with some morning fog. I arrived on a Friday and would stay until Monday morning.

This was maybe my fifteenth time in San Francisco, and I have seen the Golden Gate bridge each time. Most of my photos were taken with a digital camera, but in those cases I had a film camera with me, I was not really in the mood for shooting. But this time I was.

I expressed to Lady that I really want to shoot the bridge. She would be working that day so I planned to shoot the bridge, and she prepared a detailed set of instructions for me ( bus to take, turns, tips, etc.) and advised me to shoot the bridge from Chrissy Field.

And so the next day, Saturday, I left the hotel at 7 AM, took the bus (I think I did 3 bus changes), and did a short hike to Chrissy Field. I brought the LC-A+ and Pentax ME Super with me, and shot the bridge at different locations using different films.

Here are some impressions of the Golden Gate bridge on that day.

The Golden Gate Bridge is such a beautiful structure and everytime I see it, I feel that it is my first time seeing it. I would always be in awe. And now I am starting to think that when Tony Bennet sang I Left My Heart in San Francisco, in the line: My love waits there in San Francisco, above the blue and windy sea…, he might really be talking about the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge.

Thus, I leave you here with a photo I took that day which does not include the bridge itself but of someone staring at the bridge by the bay.

Because even a view of it from afar satisfies.
