The Diana Mini is the only camera that reminds me my childhood camera (a Kodak Instamatic, still 100% working). Both have a square format and plastic lens. But the Diana Mini has some more controls and use the common 35mm film format instead of the abandoned 126. Walking in Como during the Christmas holidays, I made the first test of this camera. Here you can find my first impressions.
Some weeks ago, I bought at Lomography Online Store a companion for my Diana F+, the 135mm format Diana Mini. It looks like a small toy with pretty colours and captivating shapes. During the Christmas holidays, I made a test of this camera loading it with a Lomography CN100 roll. Here you can read my first impressions.
The colors are pastels such as those of my Diana F +, however, the picture is less plastic and less dreamlike, calmer and more sober.
Distortion and optical aberrations at the edges of the image are less pronounced than those of its big “sister” (the Diana F +), and the lens seems to have a character all its own, different from the character of the medium format version of this camera.
As for the version medium format, it is interesting the possibility to make multiple exposures.
The contrast is not too high, facilitating the realization of pictures even in condition of presence of shadow areas together with zones illuminated by the sun.
The viewfinder is perhaps a bit small, especially for people (like me) who wear glasses, but this is not a great problem.
The possibility to choose betweed two lens apertures is useful, although more limited than the options of the Diana F+
The color rendition is quite similar to that of my Kodak Instamatic, and also the square format reminds to me the camera of my childhood!
This photos of the horses is my preferred picture of my first roll with the Diana Mini!
Have fun with your Diana Mini!
