Helsinki: The Winter Wonderland

2013-01-10 5

Do you want to experience winter and urban adventures at the same time? Then you have to pack all the warm clothes you have and come to Helsinki, where you will find tons of snow, frozen sea and rivers, warm saunas and sweet cakes and buns.

Last year, I spent almost seven months in Finland, the most beautiful country I have ever visited. Most of the days I spent there was in the capital city of Helsinki, where in winter, you can find everything you need for perfect winter holidays.

Well, of course the sun rises around 10 AM and sets down around 3 PM, so you really need to plan your Lomo day well, if you want to take many photos and experience some adventures.

For example, you can jump on the bus and get off somewhere in a Helsinki part called Arabia. There, you can visit some nice islands which are connected by frozen sea in winter. You can learn how to catch fish just from one little hole in the ice and then visit the Arabia factory and buy yourself some nice Finnish ceramics.

You can jump again on the bus and find yourself in the city center. Experience almost empty streets, the Santa Claus shop, the railway station building, the cathedral, the market place and the harbour, where you can search for some ice-breakers.

And because the sea and wind will make you feel the cold right into your bones, you will need some hot chocolate or coffee plus chocolate cake from Esplanadi cafe. Of course, you should not forget about finishing your day in a nice and hot sauna. Oh, how much I miss this winter wonderland!
