I’m not a very traditional guy; I’ve even skipped Christmas a few times. This year though was a great year for celebrating Christmas with Ms. Katie and her Family. There was plenty to do!
Generally I feel out of place for the Holidays. Travel, family, work, and money they can all be overwhelming to juggle. Christmas is a big one that most stress over. For the last few years I’ve spent it with Ms. Katie and her parents. A big part of it for them is picking a tree and making some wreaths.
Christmas seems to revolve around the tree. Some decorating around the house was done prior to the tree; but the tree seems to hold the core of the decorating. They always buy their tree from the local Methodist Church. It has nothing to price and convenience or selection; it’s just where they always buy their Christmas tree.
Once, the tree was in the house it took a few days for the family to coordinate a good night to decorate on. Tons of family ornaments collected over the years; some bought and some handmade.
I’ve never made a wreath; maybe out of paper in school as a kid. It seemed like getting extra branches was just as important as the tree itself. It was complicated and messy. There was lots of cutting branches and cutting wire; a real team effort. Sap was all over our hands. I tried to help; but I had no idea where to go with it.
Regardless of the disconnect it always comes together Christmas day. What a wonderful year thanks to Ms. Katie and her family.
