Let's Play Sardines with The Broken Hearts DJ's

We have asked 25 UK artist, illustrators and generally creative types to customise the La Sardina DIY for a huge exhibition that will run until March. The “Let’s Play Sardines” Exhibition will be shown at all three of our UK Stores. We asked The Broken Hearts Dj’s to tell us a bit about themselves and their contribution to this exciting project.

Tell us a bit about yourself?
We’re Nisha and Amber, the Broken Hearts, and predominantly we’re DJs – both live and on the radio. But on top of that we’ve created sound tracks for silent films, recorded songs using a live tap dancer as a beat and made our own music video where we starred as Vaudevillian magicians. We’ve also designed clothes inspired by sideshows, made films about the history of the circus and concocted Halloween-themed Afternoon Teas. We’ve even been Hula Hoop assistants! Also we both used to work for Beyond Retro (biggest vintage store in London) – Nisha was head of press and Amber was the buyer, so we ended up spending a lot of time together through that.

How would you describe your life in two sentences?
Travelling to DJ gigs, recording our radio show (Peppermint Candy on Jazz FM) and dressing up whenever possible!

Where did your interest in music begin?
We started DJing together about 4 years ago. A lot of our friends were DJing and putting on club nights, but it was all very testosterone-fuelled – they were all male models/DJs and would take their tops off as soon as they started playing! Very Zoolander. We thought we could play better music so we decided to give it a go!

Did you enjoy customising your Sardina DIY
Customising our Sardina DIY was a lot of fun, if a bit of a logistical challenge! We wanted to make a camera that reflected the way that we work together, and we think our double viewpoint camera expresses that perfectly!

Describe your creation in 3 words!
Siamese Twin Sardina

Anything exciting lined up for 2013?
We’ve just finished making some videos for cosmetics company Barry M that should be online in the new year. It was a great project as we got to interview a lot of girls that we think are particularly inspiring, from a plus size model to a professional hoola hooper. Keep posted for details of where and when they’ll be shown! You can keep up to date with us on Twitter

Thanks for taking part ladies!

This exhibition opens at the East London Store on Thursday 17th January 2013 and it’s totally free! Come along!
