Up in the Air: My Memories from Flying from Sydney to Los Angeles

2012-12-19

The Sydney to Los Angeles flight is one of the longest flights in the world, and as I am a native of Sydney but I live in Canada, I have done this flight more times that I would have liked to. Luckily, I have captured some images with some simple plastic cameras that you can use them during take-off and landing!

Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport is named after one of Australia’s aviation pioneers who set many records, and shot to global fame when he made the first trans-Pacific flight from the United States to Australia.

Starting this flight from this end always comes with a different feeling, happy to be starting a new adventure, sad to be leaving family, and most recently, happy to be on the way back to the Great White North.

My first main memory of this Sydney to Los Angeles flight was an over-packed plane just after Christmas, and I was first travelling overseas on my own to go on exchange for university. The temperature outside was 36 degrees and the plane was having some problems, so they didn’t turn the air-conditioning on as high as it should have been for a very full flight.

After a 2 hour delay, they finally came across the PA and said that the plane was too heavy to take off and if anyone wanted to volunteer to go on the next flight, they would get a seat upgrade. You should have seen the amount of people who stood up! We eventually took off and after 3 hours of sitting on the tarmac, then flying for over 13 hours with no sleep, I waited in the customs line for 2 hours. I then found out that I had missed my connecting flights and my 72 hours of travelling sprawled out from there. I learnt one thing from this experience, I will never fly on United again.

On the way back from this trip, I was with one of my friends and I actually was able to sleep the most out of any flight I’ve ever taken! I think having just been to Disneyland for 15 hours the day before, and then 8 hours of that day we were leaving helped with that.

These rainy shots were taken on my most recent trip between the airports. On a rainy April day this year, my boyfriend, who is afraid of flying, and I set off from Sydney Airport and had a very pleasant flight. Although neither of us slept very well, we arrived to some beautiful scenery and gorgeous weather when we landed into Los Angeles.

    The Infallible Electric Eye

By far the oddest-looking camera I own, the Electric Eye is an auto-exposure viewfinder camera made by Bell & Howell in the late 1950s. I picked one up online and ended up with another one, that came with a very cool, retro looking carrying case, from my grandfather. It took a little while to try these two out but after running some film I found that this camera is a lot of fun to shoot with.
