"Papier à êtres" - The art of working the paper

“Papier à êtres” are handmade paper creations of two artists who complement each other: Frédéric makes the structure and Sophie gives life to them, creating the character. These bright sculptures can be graceful ladies or imaginary creatures, lightening up and enchanting even the darkest corner.

At the beginning of 2008, two artists got together and with their different skills created wonderful lighting sculptures made of paper.

Sophie Mouton-Perrat already worked with paper, folding and papier mâché. She created poetic characters and colourful animals inspired by fairy tales, films, burlesque or even by daily life. Frédéric Guibrunet graduated in chemistry before his passion for paper making started. After many trips seeking the best technique, he installs himself in Canada and begins a collection of lightings, working with white paper only.
The two met in 2007 in an exhibition about paper. Some months later, they joined and created their first lighting piece, the very first “Mademoiselle”. Its pleated lower part was made by Frédéric, as well as the lightening, while Sophie created the upper part. Another pieces followed it, each one handmade and unique, made exclusively with wire, linen paper and natural glue.

Sophie and Frédéric exhibited in 2008 and 2012, in the window of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris. A special collection is also in the Galerie de l’Opéra de Paris – Opéra Garnier, dedicated to ballets and operas of each seanson.

The lovely sculptures may be found in many shops and galleries around the Globe, in countries like Australia, Japan or arround Europe. You can also check out their website: Papier à êtres.
I would love to have one bright lady at my house! Or maybe visit a “Papier à êtres” exhibition, as these pieces of art would be perfect to achieve some beautiful photographs, don´t you think so?
