My Lomo Milestones: Taming the Holga and Lomo LC-A

Milestones can mark a distance traveled, either actual physical distance or experience gained. This tells the story of my milestones, and the techniques I use to get double exposures on the refurbished Lomo LC-A.

My first Lomo milestone was getting an analogue medium format camera, in the Holga 120, with which I managed to surprise myself by taking some of my favorite photographs.

This picture is one of my favorite shots, and was taken one early morning at an abandoned railroad track that caught my eye. All ready then did I have a problem with the foam cushion holding the film roll in place getting entangled in the roll as is evident from the light leak at the bottom of the picture.
Another thing I like with the plastic lens is how they flare when the sun shines into them.

Another pivotal event for me as an analogue photographer was learning how to take double exposures easily with the refurbished LC-A, by simply pressing in the film detach button on the bottom of the camera while advancing the shutter mechanism. This lead to some nice experiments, especially in combination with cross processing.

Learning this lead to the following picture taken on my way home from work, as I passed a construction site, with several cranes, which never ceases to amaze me.

The technique for doing the double exposure is not as ideal as using the LC-A+ where you have a dedicated MX (Multiple exposure) switch, since when using this “hack” of detaching the film and advance the shutter mechanism, the film can move slightly.

The nice thing with the LC-A is its smaller size and more affordable 35mm film compared to the medium format. It provides an ease of use and portability which most medium format cameras can not compete with, which is why I always carry my LC-A with me.

Now, I am looking forward to the coming winter and I hope there will be a lot of snow and ice, since this is something I have managed to avoid shooting in analogue so far.

The Lomo LC-A is the camera that started the Lomography movement. With full controls and wide ISO range, this automatic gem is perfect for beginners and professionals alike. Get your own Refurbished LC-A in our Shop!
