2012-10-23

Ever wonder how to use that “B” setting on your favorite Lomography camera? Come on in for the Light Painting Bar Crawl at the Lomography Gallery Store in Chicago and find out. Learn how to get the coolest light painting shots!

This is one of our favorite workshops! Come find out how to paint without the mess. Paint with light, and let the camera be the brush. We will use the Diana F+, a few flashes, and some flashlights to create a beautiful affect that will blow your mind. And we will even tell you how it’s done, and learn about other surprising artists who used this affect in their own work. After the educational session, we will head down Milwaukee Ave and enjoy a few beers while we paint the city… with light!

Studying Light and Shadow with Chiaroscuro

The paintings of Rembrandt van Rijn and Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio are known for their mastery of brightness and contrast in portraiture or scenery. Their influence on the visual arts has extended even to photography. Against The Sun: Shapes in Contre-jour

The brighter the sun, the larger the cast of the shadows. Contre-jour, however, does not rely on the shadow, but the figure itself. This photographic technique is used to create stark silhouettes of the subject with the help of direct natural light. Gladly, the Lomographic community has plenty of elegant images in contre-jour. We gathered our favorites.

    Neil Krug: Pulp, Rock, Color

In 2009, Neil Krug uploaded a commercial for Pulp Art Book on Youtube. In the comments section someone asked, “Does anyone know what kind of camera he uses or how he gets his pictures to look the way they do?” Krug was on to something. He did something wildly intriguing, one that looked to have a secret formula.

How to Develop Photos on Stone in a Darkroom

I have always loved the idea of seeing my photos on stone and other natural materials. So, a few months ago, I began googling how it could be done. This is how I discovered (and fell in love with) liquid emulsion. Liquid emulsion is photographic emulsion which you can melt down and paint on any surface. You can then expose an image and develop it using traditional darkroom chemicals. In this article, I would like to explain the process a little, so that if you are also interested in giving this fun process a go, you can!

Black and White Photography: The Forms of the World

Colors may be amped to look unreal, like nothing of this world. Shots may be doubled, cross-processed, post-processed, mixed up into collages. The possibilities are infinite, yet some photographers still prefer black and white. Even in 2016, it is an ode to classic values of precision and balance. Light and shadow must be one pleasing dance. And just like in a well-choreographed piece, forms are obvious or playing coy. It all depends on how you're looking.

Cinematographer Michal Dabal on the Petzval Lens

Here’s what happens before we interview a photographer. We gush about the work though we have yet to find out the cameras and processes behind the brilliant composition or the light architecture. And even when they haven’t used a Lomo camera, we feature them anyway. But every once in a while comes a pro who uses one of our premium lenses at work and our fun cameras off-duty. This makes us mighty glad, more so when their images are good and worth sharing. We count cinematographer Michal Dabal's work among them.
