Home Made Pinhole Camera

2009-10-14 7

Tired of all this automatic this and automatic that? Sick of always needing fresh batteries? Get back to camera basics with a hole in a tin!

It’s a while ago now since experimented with this homemade pinhole but I was doing a spot of re arranging at home and came across it – which then made me think about the whole process of pinhole cameras. It really is extremely basic – a small hole which lets in light onto the film – the exposure time you control yourself. It’s very satisfying to do and even more so when you mess about with homemade ones. First of all let me tell you that I didn’t actually make this pinhole myself – a buddy of mine who does by the name of duality did, and we both shot quite a lot with them at the time. I did go with him to get all the stuff needed to make it, just his building skills are better than mine – I am a bit impatient when it comes to making small holes!

This particular pinhole featured takes 120 roll film – which I personally like better for shooting pinhole images, reason being I love the square format.

So ok here is a step by step guide
to making a pinhole from in this case a tin of spam – which is the camera I used to take the images in the gallery accompanying this write up – I found it on the internet – which is both vital and useful if you do decide to try and make one!

Hats off to Chris Keeny who put this page together! You can make pinhole cameras from all sorts of devises, from beer cans, to caravans (yes I said a caravan) Altoid tins to wheelie bins – the only limit is your imagination!

Now if making one does not interest you for whatever reason, then OK plan B comes into action and you buy a pinhole already made and ready to go. I can highly recommend the zero range of pinhole cameras _ I already did a review of the Zero 35mm one, but a 120 roll film pinhole is also available if that floats your boat better!

I really do recommend that you try and shoot some images with a pinhole – you really do feel the process and it’s a heap of fun – so don’t shy! Give it a go!
