We caught up with long time Lomographer, Michael Kuhle, owner of the Epaulet shop.
Epaulet – that little strap on the shoulder of your military inspired jacket or shirt.
Epaulet –a rocking men’s and women’s clothing boutique in Brooklyn, New York.
What’s the best Karaoke bar in NYC? And why?
Sing Sing on St. Marks Place. The song list is great, the sound gets REALLY loud, and if you bring along a good-sized bag, then you can sneak in your own booze. They have “Mr. Loverman” by Shabba Ranks, which is obviously a very key song.
If you were a Lomography camera, which would you be and why?
I’m partial to the LC-A and LC-A+. Most of the best photos that I’ve taken came through those lenses.
What’s your fall must-have for this year?
For men – a really good pair of boots made in the US or UK. They’ll cost you $350 or more, but you’ll have them for years. Boots are incredible as they age, so spend the money up front to get the most comfort and best looks. For women, a beautiful silk jersey wrap dress. You can wear it to work, wear it around town, wear it to a special event. It’s incredibly versatile.
What’s the cutest quirk about your dog, Cameo?
Whenever we play fetch, she likes to accentuate the game with frequent and explosive farting
Is there a common thread throughout all the clothing in the store?
Great fit, quality fabrics, good construction.
What does Brooklyn have that Manhattan never could?
Restaurants with outdoor seating that aren’t crowded out the ass at 8PM.
What’s one piece of essential clothing that everyone (men/women) must have in their wardrobe?
A warm, quality winter coat. And some good trousers that aren’t jeans.
“I never leave home without”:
My fiancee Adele. We work together and live together. We’re basically together 24/7.
Best spot for a date night in your neighborhood?
The “Jake Walk.” It’s a wine and cheese bar. Things are loud and casual inside, and the portions aren’t too big. Your date can get boozed up without being stuffed, and any awkward silences will be covered up by the people around you shouting about indie movies, reality TV, or whatever. I love that place.
If you could have any wild animal as a pet, what would it be and why?
A seahorse. Have you ever seen them in a tank? They are ridiculously charming. I did some research though, and it looks like they’re too high-maintenance to keep. Broke my heart, man.
What’s the weirdest question or request you’ve ever gotten from a customer?
“Do you guys sell diamond engagement rings?” We’ve got a tiny shop in Brooklyn. Diamond engagement rings? Where they hell would I even keep them?
Mike’s Advice of the Day:
“Get Close.” Almost any photo of any person looks better close than it does from far away.
Here’s a sampling of what happens with Mike behind the lens:
Swing by the shop and say hi, get your fix of all the latest Lomographic goodies, slip on a new pair of shoes, jeans, or t-shirt. All of their items are carefully selected based on labor laws, local production, independent designers and sustainable or organic materials. Not only stylish and forward thinking, Epaulet’s clothing supports and sustains our communities and our planet.
