How do you celebrate Halloween? Are you like me, that as a kid, weren’t allowed to Trick or Treat because your mum was anti-Americanization? Or were you on the other end of the scale, and was brought up in full fledged corn maze visiting, home decor that resembles a graveyard, building a costume for months kind of household? Well, let me tell you about my Halloween memories.
Living in Australia with a mother who tried to resist any Americanization of our coastal town (I didn’t have McDonald’s until I was 4 years old) left me without any memories of being dressed up like a chicken or a ladybug or any such cute little thing. However, I do have lots of memories of the neighborhood kids knocking at the door and giving them leftover party food because my birthday is actually on October 30th. It wasn’t until I turned 11 that I first went trick or treating, because I happened to have my birthday party on the weekend, which was Halloween, so all my friends and I, who were dressed up as the Spice Girls, went door knocking. I remember getting 50 cents each from one old lady, a bag of chips from another, and watching an old lady pick her nose as we tried to explain what trick or treating was.
As I got into my teenage years, having a birthday on October 30th became a little bit of a nuisance when planning a party as everyone wanted to go to someone else’s Halloween party. There was usually some kind of compromise with me having my party the day before or something so that we could all go the party dressed like something not exactly scary, something that was more so to impress the boy we had a crush on.
Since hitting drinking ago though, Halloween really has been all about the clubs and nighttime festivities. A lot of the photos in this article were taken during a walk on my birthday on which a lot of people were celebrating Halloween as it was a Saturday night. I know they aren’t the best photos, it was my first time doing night photography with my Colorsplash but I think they show how you feel when you’ve been drinking and are out on this random night with lots of people dressed as random things.
