UK Cityslicker Marianne: Lomography goes to Bestival 2012!

Missing festival season already? Re-live those good times with this review of Bestival taken from a rare press perspective with the LC-A, Actionsampler and Fisheye!

This year, I was lucky enough to obtain a photo pass to attend Bestival 2012 on behalf of Lomography, so I armed myself with my trusty (light leaky) LC-A, actionsampler and fisheye and excitedly pulled on my festival wellies.

In the press pit

For those who have never heard of Bestival, it takes place every September on the Isle of Wight and was created by Rob Da Bank of Radio 1 fame, his wife Josie and Get Involved. This year, its headliners were Florence + The Machine, New Order and Stevie Wonder…

…although Bestival also showcased a range of up and coming acts such as Palmaviolets, Jake Bugg and Nina Nesbitt.

There’s a real eclectic mix of acts to account for most music tastes, you can expect rock, pop and dance, and even a good old crazy knees up in the Polka tent.

Now, as any potential festival-goer will know, every British summer there is an abundance of music festivals to choose from, so perhaps you are thinking what makes Bestival stand out from the others? Well, if their three nominations from the UK Festival Awards this year doesn’t impress you (best major festival, best dance event, best headliner performance), here’s my personal list of reasons why I think Bestival is the best:
1. As it’s relatively young (only 8 years old) it’s still considered medium sized, so you can see big artists like Stevie Wonder without being super squashed.

2. The whole ethos of Bestival is “peace, love and dancing” for all, so what’s made Bestival so increasingly popular is the friendly and relaxed atmosphere. They encourage diversity and are more “alternative” which is demonstrated by the strong encouragement for fancy dress, which Bestivalers embrace with zeal.

3. If you come to Bestival, you can expect delightfully unique and magical themed sets, including the inflatable church, wishing tree and roller disco. More than just a music festival, there’s plenty of comedy, film, shopping and other entertainment for when you want something a little different.

4. No one really wants to choose between burger and chips and burger and chips; Bestival hosts a great variety of gourmet food outlets and is very vegetarian and vegan friendly. My personal food recommendations would be for the barbecued sweetcorn, hog roast and Isle of Wight crab and lobster meat vans.

5. The range of music is fantastic. Although the headliners and known bands might draw you in to buy a ticket in the first place, I love the fact that I always come away having heard and appreciated some new music.

Emeli Sandé

And if you still aren’t convinced, you can check it out for yourself from the full set of photos!

So, when deciding where to splash your festival ticket cash, make sure you include Bestival for an unforgettable summer experience!
