Workshop Highlights: Light Painting with the Diana F+

Photography’s most basic element is light and what better place to manipulate, emphasis, and play with this then in Washington Square Park at night. The evening started at the Lomography Gallery Store NYC with a session on how to turn a dark night into a canvas and light into the paint brush. We had so much fun and created some beautiful images.

What: Light Painting with the Diana F
When: Wednesday, August 29th
Where: Lomography Gallery Store NYC
Camera: The Diana F+

Lomographers can utilize this technique with a range of cameras as long as they have a bulb setting on their camera. After looking at a multitude of examples of lightpainting at the store, we loaded our Diana F+’s and armed ourselves with flashes.

Light painting is a technique that allows you to use any light source to create experimental long exposures. This technique can also be paired with multiple exposures to overlay portraits and landscapes. After breaking off into groups, we walked to a darker section of the park where we used the movement on the swings for our lightpainting session. We took turns using flashes and flashlights to help each other illuminate each other’s pictures.

On our way back, we captured streams of light as car lights drove past us putting an end to our bright night. This is perhaps why one of the best attributes of photography is its ability to shine light onto any situation.

Imagine a blindfolded painter whipping his brush on a canvas. This is what the light painter does in the dark. He wags his light writers in the air and trusts the camera to record what he can't see. As for the moment of truth—careful, the sparks might fly.

Influential Photographs: Washington, D.C. Government Charwoman (1942) by Gordon Parks

Arguably the defining photograph of his career, "Washington, D.C. Government charwoman" by Gordon Parks depicts Mrs. Ella Watson, an employee of the Farm Security Administration (FSA), holding a broom and with a mop and the American flag hanging at the back—a pose reminiscent of Grant Woods' famous painting, "American Gothic" (1930).

Khalik Allah: A Halo in the Darkness of Night

He calls himself Khalik Allah – a creator, a limitless, timeless, infinite being. He documents life as it comes and goes, as it hurts, as it glows inside the protagonists of his stories. His photography and videography take us deep into the never-ending nights of Harlem, a place where the darkness might seem to reach its peak. Yet, he is capturing light in its purest form, reminding us that it lies in everyone’s eyes, within everyone’s self.

    Janne Parviainen: Light Magician

Janne Parviainen is a 35-year-old artist from Helsinki, Finland. He is both a painter and a photographer but sometimes, he swaps his painting tools for light and creates illuminated pieces of art. Abandoned places are his favorite places for shoots because, according to him, "there's so much lived life and stories in abandoned places, they are the lost diaries and photos turned to dust of lives that once bloomed."

Long Exposures Around Europe with the Minitar-1 Art Lens

One of the things I like the most about the Minitar-1 Art lens is how sharp the focus can be when you shoot with a small aperture. So if you are one of those that like to shoot at night, get a tripod, add this to a late dark winter afternoon, and you will end up with a bunch of beautiful long exposures. This is what I did on my last trip to Europe.

    LomoLocations: Tokyo, Japan

Common advice tells us that Tokyo is best experienced at night. The neon lights of Ginza come on, Shibuya Crossing gets crammed, Ropponggi lets loose. Reverse the advice and we’ll get something like a palate cleanser. The Imperial Palace, Shinjuku Gyoen and small parks peppered around the city offer relief, from morning until late afternoon. Even ordinary streets appeal to tourists. We suspect those secret ramen spots add to the charm.
