La Sardina Wardrobe Artist - John Ho and his La Sardina DIY

John Ho, a Hong Kong based artist, has had the pleasure of traipsing through the city of Tokyo. His creations “Chubby Bear” and “Flowery Cat” can be seen in his picture books, various newspapers, and magazines. Being the type of person that only responds to genuine emotions, you must wonder how he’d interpret the La Sardina and customize it!

1. First, could you briefly tell us about the theme of your La Sardina DIY ? What’s the concept behind it?
My artwork is the Chubby Bear. My friends commented that Fleshy Beatris is very lovely looking, so I decided to put his cute face on the front side of the camera. When the audience sees a cute face in front of them I’d expect them to reciprocate with a cute facial expression.

2. Where do you usually get your inspiration?
The Chubby Bear is my own creation. While drawing, I would project myself, my face, my style, my clothing, as well as my facial expression onto him. Perhaps he is me, and I’m using him to tell my own story.

3. If you were to give this to your favourite artist, who would it be? Why?
I would give the La Sardina DIY to myself, and give a La Sardina which hasn’t been DIY-ed to non-artists, so they could be artists too.

4. Could you share any tips or thoughts with all the DIY newbies?
If you feel like drawing with Acrylic, remember not to overdo it. I overdid it with very thick layer of colour on the camera initially and then realized that it was very difficult to dry. So I had to wipe it off, and recover it with a very thin layer of colour. If you want the colour to be rich and vibrant, you could add a few more layers after the first coat.

5. Where, or on who, would you like to use your La Sardina DIY for picture taking?
I wish to take pictures of unhappy people, hopefully Chubby Bear could put a smile on their faces. (Editor’s note: how sweet!)
