Workshop Highlights: 'Illustrate Your Traits' La Sardina DIY Workshop by Kitt Santos

Imagine a can of sardines. Instead of fish, tightly packed inside is creativity. The launch of Lomography’s new La Sardina DIY gave a way for kids to unleash their inner artist. With its customizable body, anyone can experiment with different materials and mediums. The “Illustrate Your Traits” workshop was definitely an awesome way for me to share what I love doing: watercolor painting!

LGS Singapore’s Store Representative Kenneth started the workshop with a brief introduction about Lomography and the La Sardina DIY Edition. Everyone afterwards took turns in introducing themselves. I was overjoyed by the bunch of interesting participants. Some of them have background in the Arts while others were simply curious about watercolors. Despite that fact, we all knew that we were bound by the same interest – Lomography.

Using the La Sardina DIY template, we started with some tracing techniques: everyone flipped to the back of their printed template and started shading. The kids looked incredibly eager as they flipped the paper and started drawing on the outline of the La Sardina, instantly transferring the shaded part of the back to the watercolor paper.

Teaching watercolor basics were pretty much a breeze to a group of enthusiastic participants. From simple monochromatic gradation to multi-colored ones as well as slightly more complex techniques, they listened actively and doused their Strathmores with brilliant palettes of watercolour. We then continued to apply what they learnt and started to “Illustrate Their Traits” on their La Sardina DIY template that the initially transferred on the watercolor paper.

The workshop ended with the participants happily displaying their finished La Sardina DIY custom watercolor plates. Each painted with their own style, uniqueness and traits. With their personal little cans of creativity now opened, I feel more magic is about to come out of their skillful hands.
